Shrinking Universe
This just in from The Times of Malta:"Staff and directors at the Allied Group have been utterly devastated by the sudden death of one of their best loved colleagues, Alfred Giglio. The 47-year-old The Times photographer had just returned to Strickland House after an assignment when he suddenly collapsed and died on the spot."
I didn't know him well, but I believe that this is a great loss. Among his best known photos are those seen by many people last January where he captured the atrocious handling of detainees by AFM personnel at the Safi Barracks.
I'm sure that this will make many of us think deeply about our own mortality and the impermanence of everything; especially coming as it does less than a week after Julian Manduca's passing.
My condolences to his family, colleagues, and friends.

It's a huge loss, Toni. He was not just a colleague, he was family to most of the reporters. The photographers have a huge sphere of influence, they are the ones who take out the rookie reporters and show them the ropes. But he was also a very special person, someone it was easy to become fond of... the staff at The Times are gutted.
I remember Giglio when I worked as a reporter with The Times back in summer 91. There was him and Frank Attard and as a "rookie reporter" as wwwitchie explained above, i had most contact with them. He probably forgot all about me, but I never forgot him, and whenever I saw him in passing my head always turned... ah, i'd tell myself, there's giglio. I remember he used to go fishing in the Grand Harbour before work. I've got to shake this fear of death from me now. 2 sudden deaths in a week inevitably makes you think.
